Purpose. This policy sets the requirements for a workplace free of the effects of drugs and alcohol in safety sensitive aviation activities.

1.Purpose and scope

Aircraft maintenance is a safety sensitive aviation activity and the business must maintain a drug and alcohol management plan under the regulations. This policy applies to all staff and contractors performing or supporting maintenance at any site.

2.Requirements

Workers must not perform or support maintenance while impaired by alcohol or drugs. The permitted blood alcohol level for safety sensitive work is zero. Prescription and over the counter medication that affects performance must be declared to the supervisor before starting work.

3.Testing

The business will conduct random testing, testing on reasonable suspicion and testing after an accident or serious incident. Testing will be carried out by an accredited provider and results will be treated as confidential medical information.

  • Random testing across all sites
  • Reasonable suspicion testing initiated by a supervisor
  • Post accident and post incident testing
  • Confidential handling of results

4.Response to a positive result

A worker who returns a positive result must be removed from safety sensitive work immediately and referred for assessment and support. Return to work will be subject to a medical review and follow up testing.

5.Education and support

All staff will receive drug and alcohol awareness education at induction and every three years. The employee assistance program is available to any worker who seeks help voluntarily, and voluntary disclosure before testing will be supported rather than disciplined.

6.Review

This policy and the management plan will be reviewed every two years and after any positive result or regulatory change.
