Purpose. This plan sets out how the business responds to fire, fuel spill, aircraft ground incident, medical emergency and severe weather at each site.

1.Scope

This plan applies to the Archerfield hangar and workshops, the Sunshine Coast line station and the Toowoomba workshop, and to all staff, contractors, customers and visitors. It works alongside the airport operator's emergency procedures at each aerodrome.

2.Emergency control

The Chief Warden at Archerfield is the Base Maintenance Manager with the Line Maintenance Supervisor as deputy. Each site and shift has a trained warden and first aiders whose names are displayed at the hangar doors. Emergency contact numbers for the aerodrome and emergency services are posted at every telephone.

3.Fire

Aircraft, fuel and hangar fires spread rapidly. On discovering a fire, raise the alarm, notify the aerodrome operator, and attempt to extinguish only if trained, the fire is small and an exit is behind you. Evacuate to the assembly point on the grass beside the car park and do not re-enter until the Chief Warden gives the all clear. Aircraft must not be moved out of a burning hangar by untrained staff.

  • Raise the alarm and call emergency services
  • Notify the aerodrome operator
  • Evacuate to the assembly point
  • Wardens complete head counts
  • Leave aircraft unless trained to move them

4.Fuel and fluid spills

Small spills will be contained with the spill kit and absorbent and reported using the occurrence report form. Fuel spills larger than the spill kit can handle, or any spill reaching a drain, require evacuation of the area, elimination of ignition sources, notification of the aerodrome operator and emergency services, and reporting to the environmental regulator through the Quality and Safety Manager.

5.Aircraft ground incidents

If an aircraft is damaged by ground equipment, a jacking failure, a propeller strike or a towing incident, the area must be made safe, the aircraft grounded, the scene preserved for investigation and the occurrence reported. Injured persons will be treated first.

6.Medical emergencies and severe weather

Call for a first aider and emergency services for serious injury; the defibrillator is at the hangar office. During thunderstorm warnings all apron work must stop, aircraft must be secured and staff must move indoors until the warning clears.

7.Drills and review

An evacuation drill will be held at each site every six months and a fuel spill drill annually. The plan will be reviewed after every drill and every real activation.
